Soulmate was formed around three years ago when Rudy Wallang (who was a member of “The Great Society” and MOJO.) and Tipriti Kharbangar, who has sung quite a number of concerts as a solo artiste as well as doing a short stint on vocals and backing vocals with MOJO, decided to continue their musical journey—the BLUES being their driving force and main source of inspiration.
Their first performance being at the Roots Festival in Shillong in the year 2003. SOULMATE also played at the 2004 Roots Festival alongside Emtrio from Italy. Next, they performed at the International “Jazzmandu” Jazz Festival held earlier in March 2004 in Kathmandu; Nepal.They played a series of eight concerts at different venues in Nepal alongside bands and musicians from Norway, Indonesia, Britain, Benin (Africa), The Czech Republic and Nepal. The band has also played a series of concerts in Darjeeling (Darjeeling Carnival 2004), Kalimpong (Kalimpong Winter Fest.2004), Sikkim (Mangan Music Festival),Aizawl- Mizoram, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Mumbai and Goa besides playing gigs in their hometown, Shillong.
The band has gone through quite a few personnel changes since its inception in ’02 with Keith Wallang (ex-Mojo, The Great Society) playing bass guitar, Valte Chhongtu (ex-The Honey Drippers and The Next Band) rhythm guitar, Momo Laishram- (ex-Cannibals)-Drums, Arwell Warjri-Bass, Shawn Nongrum-Drums and last but not the least,Manas Chowdhary (Euphonic Trance)-Bass. The band, through the years has gone from strength to strength and has made quite a name for itself in the club circuits especially in Delhi, Mumbai and Goa.
At present the members of SOULMATE are Rudy Wallang (Guitar and Vocals) and Tipriti Kharbangar (Vocals and guitar) complemented by session players Sam Shullai on drums and Ferdy Dkhar on Bass Guitar
Their debut album entitled “Shillong” was released in 2005 under the Mumbai based ‘Only Much Louder’ record label and will be available at most music stores in India and also on their website
